This is a story of young, new world Canada, but also of the dilemma between relinquishing old tried and true ways that are comfortable in favor of exploration and adventure inherent in a new way of life. The fact that Lady Merton is part of ‘old money’ British society makes this a particularly difficult choice, but I would imagine that all early settlers in both the western US and Canada had to muster up their courage to make similar decisions. Lady Merton colonist Humphry Ward 9781172310456 Books Reviews

This book follows the travels of Elizabeth Merton, an English widow, on an adventure through the wilds of the new territories of Canada. She and her ailing brother travel across the country by the newly established railways. The story is richly descriptive and causes the reader to imagine the country as it was before settlers. Along the way, Elizabeth questions her very wealthy but clausterphobic life in England and whether or not she could leave it all behind for a colonist's hard life and a Canadian with no title or well-known family. This is a very innocent novel that reflects the lifestyles of the times and the sacrifices of those unfortunate enough to be attracted to someone without money or family connections.
This is a wonderful romance set in Canada with many twists and turns until finally the couple gets together. I enjoy many old stories and have found this author to be one I like.
